After completing studies into German Culture and Theatre Studies at the Humboldt University’s philosophy department in 1958, Nele Herlting initially worked freelance for radio and theatre. After several years in London, she joined in 1962 the music and visual arts department of the Academy of Arts in the capacity of specialist worker. As of 1974, Hertling also worked as secretary of the Senate. In 1987 she started to manage the »Workshop Berlin« that aimed to create a programme for the occasion of Berlin being the »European Capital of Culture« during the year of 1988.
In 1989 she founded the Hebbel Theatre and managed it until 2003.
In 1999 she received the Bundesverdienstkreuz, the federal cross of merit, and took part in many committees and networks, such as Informal European Theatre Meeting and in Gulliver Clearing House Amsterdam.
Nele Hertling has been a member of the »German-French Cultural Senate« since 1995 and was its president in 2001. From 2003 to 2006 she directed the »Berlin DAAD’s artists’ programme«, and in 2006 she became Vice President of the Academy of Arts.
